A Fistfull of Demos
Here are the first three demo tracks for the album. The opening track is one of two bookends that kind of reflect back to the early albums. I call it 'En-trance'. The second demo is 'Poseur'. The first half is coming together nicely. The second half? Not so much. It's pretty gritty. The third song is 'My Name is Raul'. There are no vocals yet, but if you've heard the original, you can probably guess that that's not going to be a big deal. The bass lines and most of the synth/sample work on these are pretty rough. They'll be cleaned up, and Guitar (and maybe more drums) added. I wanted to put all three up, because I think they make the direction of the album seem pretty obvious, even if they're (very) rough at this stage.

Give a listen. Let me know what you think. Unless what you think is, "Thom's strange..." You don't need to let me know that, because I already know that.

Wow! I really like these cuts. YOu actually bring melody to Poseur, but leave out half of the lyrics. I know they may not go with the style of the song. But, it helps to pay tribute at least lyrically to the original. But, I like the interpretation. And, the latin/african feel to Raul is awesome. Totally not what I was expecting for these first two tracks. Awesome!!!
YOu mentioend having trouble with the second half. Second half of what? The album track listing?
There are only two things that I'm REALLY hoping for with the songs that have some sort of musical structure to them that you will cover.
1) Preserve the lyrics.
2) Preserve the main melodies. (By all means, I like the variant and your interpretation. But, it would be nice to have some sort of reference for these later tracks so that when people hear your versions in what ever style you chose, that they can say that they recognize the song, even if it's a smooth jazz version of a heavy metal song.
Again, very very awesome versions. THis is going to be exciting.
Yeah, the first part of the new Poseur is a re-working of the spoken word part of the original. When it gets to the bouncier second part, where it falls to just bass and drums, is where the second vocal part "They're coming to the street..." etc. goes. I just haven't figured out a melody for it yet. That's the 'second half' that I mentioned having trouble with.
As far as losing the 'main melodies' of the originals, I didn't have a lot to work with, if you go back and listen to them. I think that, as BR progresses, I'll have a lot more to work with that they'll become more revisionings of the originals, as opposed to these earlier songs, which are almost as much an homage as a 'cover'.
In so far as both songs go I really see the guitar adding a lot of that original 'chaos' to it. (Although with Raul, I have some good ideas about working with the Vocals...) I also plan to put that 'mary had a little lamb-esque' melody that occurs in the original in this version as well. For some reason it really cracks me up.
With 'My Friend Creation' I actually do have a vocal melody of sorts to work with, but the guitar isn't doing a much of anything. If you listen to it, it's mostly me singing along with a drum machine.
Trashcan Blues is a pretty standard song (by early BR standards), with the harmonica, but it's really only Operation Kiyard and beyond that seem to be defined enough to *really* pull original stuff out of.
That said, don't dismiss these songs out of hand. Remember that they're really just incomplete demos to give an idea.
Right. I know with these early tracks, there isn't much to go on as far as melody is concerned. lol I was referring more to the later tracks.
Great job on these, man.
